"Lindsay just gave me the other half of her BFF necklace!"
It wasn’t like Cassie had to shout it. Jade and Izzie were standing right next to her, leaning against the brick wall, waiting for their turn on the four square court.
"That’s nice." Jade smiled at Cassie as she ran off to show all the other girls her new treasure.
"Lindsay’s best friends with everyone," Izzie commented, "...for a week."
Jade nodded. Half the girls in Mrs. Madison’s fifth grade class had worn BFF necklaces from Lindsay. Things would be great between Lindsey and her new best friend until the new friend did or said something Lindsay didn’t like. Then it was bye bye BFF.
"I hope Cassie doesn’t get hurt too badly when Lindsay asks for the necklace back," Izzie whispered as she and Jade finally made it onto the four square court.
"Izzie, I could never give you a BFF necklace," Jade said. When Izzie’s eyes widened as if she were hurt, Jade added, "’cause you’re much more than my BFF. You’re my CFF."
Jade smiled. "Christian Friend Forever."
What’s a Christian Friendship Look Like?
God didn’t intend for us to journey through life alone. Remember, even Jesus had a group of twelve CFFs (he called them disciples) who helped him do his work on Earth. Friends are great, but friends who share faith and a commitment to Christ are even better. Why? Let's compare BFF's with CFF's.
BFF versus CFF
*Shared interests.......................................................*Shared interests PLUS shared love of God
*Friendship fades when interests change........*Friendship has lasting power. Faith grows with friendship
*Might want to change things about u that embarrass her.....*Loves u 4 u, warts and all!
*Is there 4 u when it's convenient...............................*Would walk thru fire 4 u. U R like her sister.
How about some real life examples?
CFFs treat each other with love always.
Example: Reminding you how beautiful you are when you gain weight or struggle with acne.
CFFs are willing to make sacrifices for each other.
Example: Choosing to spend your birthday with you instead of going to her favorite band’s concert.
CFFs forgive each other.
Example: If you forget a movie date, she accepts your apology and lets it go. She doesn’t throw it up in your face every chance she gets..
CFFs can trust each other.
Example: She’ll never post something embarrassing about you on Facebook. She won’t spread rumors about you or talk unkindly about you to others.
CFFs don’t stop being your friend when you’ve said or done something bad.
Example: If you posted something bad on Facebook, a CFF will talk to you about it and let you know her feelings were hurt. She’ll accept your apology and forgive you.
Christian friendships aren’t perfect. But true Christian friends share your love of God and understand forgiveness, grace and the kind of all-powerful love that would make Jesus get on the cross to die for our sins. Are you a CFF? Do you have CFFs? If you answered "no" to either of those questions, get out there and get busy!
MEET THE AUTHOR - Leanna Kay
I love that I can share my relationship with God with my own CFF’s. On any given Saturday, you might find us chatting about which Biblical heroine to write about next or hitting the mall for a little shopping.
Writing this article made me really evaluate the friends I have in my own life. When I thought about my Christian friends I realized how much I trusted them to give me sound advice. A shared love of Christ is an amazing foundation for friendship. If your daughter is lacking in CFFs, find a Christian youth group near your home. Your daughter will thank you!
